Run through the IDSSA, McGill Has Hope wants to put a $5 Bracelet of Hope on the wrist of every student at McGill.

On Sunday, April 11th, McGill students are invited to this charitable party being held at Cafeteria Restaurant on St. Laurent. There is no cover to come to the event and Cafeteria has agreed to donate 10% of what they make that night… So come on out for dinner and dancing, or just one of them, and be sure to bring a friend. Special guests are DJ Eddie Lewis and DJ Soul.

Waterloo Student Fundraising Event

Students on the Mayor Students Advisory Council have taken on the challenge of a kickoff awareness event for the Waterloo Region. This will be a night of entertainment focusing local talent and featuring speakers, Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik, Mayor Halloran and a representative of Dignitas Youth. It will be held on March 25th at 7:00pm at Waterloo Collegiate. Admission to the event is five dollars which includes a bracelet!!

10 000 Villages Fair

Thank you so much for everyone who came out to the 10 000 Villages Fair this past weekend. The fair as a whole was a huge success, and Bracelet of Hope sold 58 bracelets over the course of the fair, raising $302! This brings the campaign total at Trent University so far to almost $900. In order to reach the $1,000 mark Trent will also be hosting an event in March, more information on this to come soon!

Bracelets to be Featured at 10 000 Villages Fair

This week at Trent University in Peterborough the BOH campaign will be featured at the 10 000 Villages Fair Trade Fair. The event begins on Thursday February 4th and will continue until Saturday February 6th in the First People’s Gathering Space. Bracelets will be on sale for the usual $5.00 so come out to buy a bracelet and see the many other fair trade featured items that the fair will have to offer!

Volunteer Fair featuring SRI/BOH and Keynote address by Dr. Anne-Marie!!

On Thursday February 4th there will be a volunteer fair showcased at Queensmount Senior Public School. Queensmount has set up a committee to aid students in their transition from elementary to high school. They have set up a volunteer fair to help students find ways to fulfill their community service requirement for high school graduation. “It is the goal of our transition committee to equip our students with the information, tools and world view about the short and long term personal and societal benefits of volunteerism”. The event will begin with a keynote address from Dr. Anne-Marie and will be followed by the volunteer showcase. As a part of this SRI will be at the fair to help teach students how to get involved with campaigns such as BOH.

McGill Bracelet Sales in Leacock Lobby

On February 4th, 2010, the McGill IDSSA’s Box of Hope committee will be setting Bracelets of Hope for $5 each. The campaign launched at McGill in November of 2009 and in the past week, the group has made presentations to the Africa Students Society and the AUS Council! Buy your red and white beaded bracelet in the Leacock lobby between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Stephen Lewis: Lecture and Panel – Jan 22, 2010 7:30 – 10:00pm

“Global Health: Hope or Deterioration?” – Mr. Lewis will address the growing disparity in the standard of health between the developed and developing countries. He will take a hard look at the emergence and re-emergence of communicable diseases, the struggle for pharmaceuticals at low cost, the absence of health professionals, the question of resources, and the overall efforts of impoverished societies to reach the admirable levels of health which characterize Canada and the United States.

Following Mr. Lewis’ lecture, there will be a panel discussion on alternative approaches to addressing the issues surrounding global health. That discussion will include several notable Christians with experience in international health and development including, but not limited to, David Toycen, President of World Vision Canada, Dr. James Rusthoven, an oncologist and bio-ethicist from McMaster University, Amboka Wameyo, Advocacy and Program Manager of World Vision, Davis Omanyo, East Africa Regional Leader for CRWRC, and Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik, founder and director of The Masai Centre. Musical Guests Krystaal will also be featured.

Formerly the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Mr. Lewis is a Professor in Global Health in the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMasterUniversity. He is also Chair of the board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which is dedicated to turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa (www.stephenlewisfoundation.org).

December a Great Month for Ontario Schools!

Congratulations to all the schools that have been doing a great job with events this month.

This World AIDS Day, December 1st, Trent U held a movie-screening for the Tsepong Clinic documentary and raised over $400! As well, a speaking engagement featuring Anne-Marie was held at the Schulich School of Medicine at UWO, attracting many students and spreading the word about how Canadians are making an effort to end HIV/AIDS in Lesotho.

On December 3rd, Victoria College of the University of Toronto held a charity open mic night, “Mike the Change” that featured incredible student talent while raising over $1000 to support an end to HIV/AIDS.

Bishop MacDonell HS in Guelph held an incredible Dance-A-Thon for the cause on December 4th, promoting the Bracelet of Hope and student activism.

December 8 marked the last of Box of Hope events for this year, as Anne-Marie spoke at Sacred Heart School in Guelph. Going out with a bang, they were able to raise approximately $1200!

Dance-a-thon for Hope!!

Bishop MacDonell High School located on 200 Clair St. West in Guelph will be hosting their annual dance-a-thon this Friday December 4th in order to raise funds for Masai for Africa/Bracelet of Hope. This 12 hour event has proven to be a great success in the past and we are hoping for an even better turn out this year as the event will be run from 1pm-1am as opposed to starting much later as it has done in previous years. Come on out to support these dedicated dance-a-thoners this Friday!!

Gathering of Hope a Huge Success!!

The Gathering of Hope run by Reach Lesotho students this past weekend (Saturday November 28th) was a huge success. The students delivered a fantastic night which showcased amazing talents and a silent auction. The funds raised from the event will be donated to OHAfrica and Bracelet of Hope and the students were able to raise a whopping $7,300!! Great work guys!!
